From eighth grade all the way through high school, there was a single,late-dos era two-player game that all my friends and I knew and loved.Upon many occasions that we got together, we would play it. I'mtalking about, thatfantastic game that's somewhere between a two dimensional game ofor a real-time. It was great, thougha little buggy, but damn did the physics felt nice (in a wonderfullyunrealistic way), and the ninja rope was a freaking blast to use.But it was closed source, and apparently the author lost the sourcecode due a disk crash, and for years we were stuck with playing thesame tired old binary. Then Windows XP came out, and sound stoppedworking entirely. And eventually it moved from a game we played to agame we reminisced.Over the years I've checked on the number of clones which have comeabout, but none of them really had the same feel as the originalLiero. But now that's changed, for a new free and open source Lieroclone is out, called, based off the codebase.
And it'sawesome. It supports the original Liero weaponpack, as far as I cantell, flawleslly, and has a vast wealth of mods and levelpacksavailable for download. On top of that, it has network play. Whichisn't perfect, and I often find myself running into my own bullets inways that would never happen offline, but it's still pretty good.Installing it on Linux actually isn't that hard. There's a.deb fileavailable on the,if you happen to be running Debian or Ubuntu, as well as windowsbuilds. But I'd recommend running from subversion, which currentlyhas auto level and mod download support (the latest stable releasesdon't).

To compile, run these commands:svn co openlieroxsudo apt-get install libsdl1.2-dev libsdl-mixer1.2-dev libsdl-image1.2-dev libgd2-noxpm-dev zlib1g-dev libxml2-dev./compile.sh.then you can run either 'sudo./install.sh' './start.sh', dependingon whether you want to install it or just run it locally withoutinstalling.I'm actually interested in playing a few games online with people Iknow. Maybe even having a small local openlierox lan party. Anyone interested?

ULVHOCKEYLIERO
Introduction Liero is a small and complelety awsome computer game. The essence of it to kill your opponent. Your charachter is a small worm, with a big gun! Your opponent is a small worm, with a big gun!!! So, you just get that big gun of yours and you kill the other guy before he kills you, quite simple isnt it? So, its a few details too. Weapons Theres more then one gun you can use. At the start of a new game, you can choose from a pretty great number of weapons. You can choose the Uzi, the Bazooka, the Mingun. the Rifle, the Shotgun and some sort of mines! To get full details on the weapons, click here. Options So lets go in to the details. First remeber to set all the options the way you want them, then start! Options are important to set correctly for you to have fun playing! The most important option is Player 1 (or 2) options. (Player 1 get the left side of the screen) When setting your player options, be careful NOT to have the same contols as your opponent. If you use the same movementbuttons as the CPU you may not be able to walk properly! The option 'change' is the button you hold in as you change your weapons in the game. When it comes to healt its all up to you to decide how much you want..but if you choose 1% health, the slightest injury will kill you, and you choose to go all the way to 10000%, you will probably not die for the next 15 minutes! The scond most important option is Amouth of Blood, it must be set to 500%. If not, there wont be enough blood!!! The the next option to be set carefully is LOADING TIMES! If loading times are set to 0% you and your opponent will have a bloody violent fight, and if set to a higher rate, your fight will depent more on tactics. 0% kix ass of course but from time to time, you feel that it could be fun to be a bit tactical! But if you play agains th CPU! Dont use to much tactics, because CPU has a shitty tactic, he wil just move in your direction and shoot on sight! Thats not good tactics when thes a big rock in the way. Now back to options! Map settings To set the map as you want it there are 3 controls. 1.) 'Level', this is where you choose what level/map you wish to use as your battlefield. 2.) 'Map', if this is on, you will se a miniature map marking yout your and your opponents position. Some would consider this as cheating! 3.) 'Regenerate map', if this is on, the map will reset to its original appearance every time a new game is started! (using weapons does have a destructive effect on the maps appearance! Opponents Without the opponent, Liero would suck ass, so this is an interesting topic. There are two possible opponents, HUMAN or CPU (cpu = computer controlled). The fair and square recommendation from Ulvhockey™ is to find a friend and play HUMAN vs. HUMAN!!! Playing against CPU is really pointless, you have to seek the entire planet to find a human opponent more stupid than the CPU!!! The CPU doesn´t even know how to avoid obsticles! When he´s close to you but theres a wall in between, he´ll shoot the wall until it kills himself! So playing vs. CPU is boooooring!!!!!!!!!! Moving around To move the most effectivly, you use the ninja rope! The ninja rope is fired with Jump+Change and swing yourself across the map! Then you got the standard walk, or crawl or whetver a worm does? But I concider that to be S-L-O-W ! ! ! so I prefer other ways of transportation. For example if you have somethin like 1000-10000% in health and 0% on loading times, you can move aroun X-tremely fast by using the rifle. Shoot in the opposite direction of where you wanna go and ! your there. I musn´t forget to tell you about the digging. To dig, move towards dirt and while holding in the movebutton, click in the opposite direction. Dig in! Thank you. /Ulvhockey |

1.)Ammoshells. This is the stuf that comes out of some of the weapons as you keep on fiering. You can acctually build youself structures out of this fragile material. 2.)Player 1. This is you or your opponent 3.) Rocks. The rocks are rock solid and you cant destroy them with any of the weapons. 4.) Player 2. This could be you, but in this case, its me; Ulvhockey! 5.) Dirt. The dirt is not at all like the rock. The dirt can be destroyed, AND recreated. 6.)Game of tag timer. This counts down the time you have left before you must kill you opponent. The timer will not start until the first kill has been made! 7.)Map. This map shows where you and your opponent is. 8.) Health / Reload / Kills. Health is the green bar and shows how much health you have left. The puple bar shows how long time you have to wait before you may fire again. The kill countar shows how many time you have killed your opponent! |
